Barber Vintage Motorsports Museum Launches
First Distinctive Motorcycle License Plate

BIRMINGHAM, AL – October 19, 2007 -- The Barber Vintage Motorsports Museum announces the first State of Alabama-issued distinctive license plate for motorcycles.

While many distinctive auto license plates exist, such as the Barber Museum car tag, this is the first time legislation was passed to allow a distinctive tag for motorcycles.

These new motorcycle plates will benefit the Barber Museum, a 501(c)3 non-profit foundation, dedicated to the preservation, interpretation, exhibition and history of motorcycles, vintage vehicles and motorsports. The tag will be available beginning in January of 2008 and will cost $50, in addition to the normal license plate fee. $41.25 of the proceeds will go directly to the museum, and the additional fee is tax deductible.

“This tag will allow motorcyclists to become a part of the museum’s mission and future,” comments Museum Executive Director Jeff Ray, “By purchasing the tag, they donate funds to ensure the museum is available for many generations to come.”

The Barber Museum features the world’s largest and most diverse collection of motorcycles in a state-of-the-art 144,000 square-ft facility, with five floors and over 750 motorcycles on display. The museum is located fifteen miles east of downtown Birmingham at the Barber Motorsports Park.

The vision for the museum began in 1988, when Birmingham businessman George W. Barber started a small private collection of motorcycles and cars in an old warehouse on the Southside of Birmingham. The collection opened as a museum in 1994 and quickly outgrew its original downtown location. In September 2003, the museum moved and opened in its current location near Leeds, Alabama, where the attraction brings in tourists and locals alike.

In addition to the motorcycle collection, the Barber Museum also displays a collection of rare, unique race cars, including the world’s only 1964 Ferrari Formula One racecar, the Ferrari 158. In 1964, Englishman John Surtees used this car to win the Grand Prix World Championship. The Barber Museum also holds the world’s most extensive collection of Lotus race cars.

The Barber Vintage Motorsports Museum hosts the largest collection of motorcycles and vintage vehicles in the nation, and is a 501(c)3 non-profit foundation. The museum is dedicated to the preservation, interpretation, exhibition and history of motorcycles, vintage vehicles and motorsports. Spanning five floors and over 1,100 motorcycles, the museum is located at the Barber Motorsports Park outside of Birmingham, Alabama.
